When have you not relied on the mercy of God?
I don’t just mean, when have you forgotten or been unmindful of God’s mercy – for even in these times our very existence is reliant on the mercy of God. So the question is a trick. But consider it, and consider all of the ways that you are reliant on His mercy.
We relegate mercy to a tiny corner – mercy is God not giving you all of the bad things you deserve. What a negative description and expression of mercy! Instead, recognize that in His mercy punishment is withheld (yes!), but also His gracious gifts are bestowed: those that He is pleased to give, for they lead to fullness of life; those that He gives because of love for us, because we’ve asked. He grants these in His mercy. True repentance of sin; His Holy Spirit; bold faithfulness; a great parking spot at the mall; help on a test. All of these He grants in His mercy.
So I ask again, when have you not relied on the mercy of God?
